BrainWhey© is a novel, proprietary andpatent pending platform p formulated with three GRAS ingredients that have been in nutritional use for decades. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are omega-3 fatty acids, that cannot be effectively produced by the human body. Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is the longest and most highly unsaturated of the omega-3 fatty acids and is known to play a pivotal role in brain function throughout life. It influences brain development, visual function, cognitive decline, depression, ADHD, liver diseases and has been used to treat periodontal disease (PD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Food fortified with DHA is often called "brain food" in Asian countries.
Prior attempts to add DHA and/or EPA directly to food products have been unsuccessful because the unstable omega-3 fatty acids rapidly give rise to a fishy taste and aroma in the food product and make it unpalatable. It is believed that DHA and EPA are particularly unstable in the presence of water, light and high heat, this further complicates their use in food products. Unlike other fatty acids, these omega-3 fatty acids can’t be stabilized in foods merely by adding antioxidants to the foods.
It is desirable to provide a simple method to allow of incorporation of the omega-3 fatty acids into foods that does not involve complicated processing steps or the use of unique ingredients and that promotes the shelf life of the food product. Shelf life is defined as the length of time the food product can be stored without the development of fishy aromas or tastes.
BrainWhey© platform comprises Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) and one or more isolated proteins that help preserve the omega-3 from peroxidation and odor deterioration when it is incorporated into foods.
MCTs are derived from the mixtures of caprylic (C:8) and capric (C:10) fatty acids which are fractionated from coconut or palm kernel oils. They have found dietary and therapeutic use in neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and athletic applications. Apart from dietary use, MCT emulsions have also been used in drug delivery platforms. Whey protein is by product of cheese production and is being increasingly used for supplement protein requirements. ACompany has completed the formulation of BrainWhey© -K for food products meant for Kids market segment where the emphasis is in high protein and high DHA with minimal MCT needs. The platform upon launch would deliver 1.5 g DHA and 22g protein in a 30g serving.
The pipeline product includes a formulation for use in products targeted to the lactose and milk intolerant population.
